Little Mix premiere first ‘proper’ single; instantly outdo 4 years’ worth of The Saturdays

There are many years when the runner-up of The X Factor has done better than the winner. This is not one of those years.

‘Wings’, the first official single to come from Little Mix, is basically one of the best girlband singles for YEARS.

I love The Saturdays, but there’s a strong sense of identity and “POW THIS IS WHAT WE’RE ABOUT”-ness of this song that’s been missing from most of Frankie, Una, Vanessa, Mollie and Rochelle’s work, especially recently.

Basically, despite fears that it would waste the potential of a really exciting X Factor-winning group, this song is a fucking tune.

Also it contains the word ‘boy’d’.

Little Mix cover Beyonce a cappella; are flawless

Those who didn’t want Little Mix to win last year’s X Factor have been keen to point out that they weren’t the strongest singers in the competition.

Well, for a start, they clearly haven’t been buying “better singer” Marcus Collins’ album.

And, secondly, the girls may not be a quartet of Adeles but you can probably count the number of pop groups who can do this a cappella and be this good on one hand. It’s not quite up there with Stooshe’s ‘Lego House’ but it’s mighty close.

Little Mix walk down steps to ‘Wings’ on Alan Carr Chatty Man; it sounds excellent

When Little Mix said they were previewing a 30-second snippet of their new single ‘Wings’ on Alan Carr: Chatty Man tonight, I don’t think I was alone in expecting something like a video preview or a focussed ‘segment’ of sorts.

Alas, it was just the music the girls walked down the steps to when they made their entrance.

Not a lot could be gathered from it, what with all the talking and audience applause (damn their popularity!), but the good news is that, after all the inside whispers that it’s an amazing proper debut, it does indeed sound like an amazing proper debut.

Irresistibly catchy and packed with lyrics that gleefully tread the line between inspirational and cliché, its full-length premiere can’t come soon enough.

It’s out on July 22, so don’t expect to be kept waiting too much longer. But the good news is that we could actually have an X Factor-winning act with longevity on our hands.

Watch the show on 4OD to hear it for yourself (skip to the 4-minute mark).

The new Little Mix single has a name and is apparently amazing

Well, they’ll have a hard job topping ‘Cannonball’, but Little Mix have announced the title of their first post-X Factor single.

The girls will release ‘Wings’ as the trailer for their debut album later this summer, and apparently they’ve co-written it as well.

Early industry whispers are that the track is one of the best ‘proper’ first singles to ever come from a champion of the talent search, joining Leona Lewis’ ‘Bleeding Love’, Alexandra Burke’s ‘Bad Boys’ (no, seriously) and Joe McElderry’s ‘Ambitions’ (no, seriously) on the list of outstanding openers.

The accuracy of these claims can be put to the test as early as tomorrow (June 1), when the girls appear on Alan Carr: Chatty Man and bring with them a 30-second snippet of the song. The interview was filmed yesterday.

With Marcus Collins all but dropped (‘Mercy’ is out on Sunday and has not registered at all on the iTunes chart yet), there’s a real chance that, for once, the winner might actually do better than the runner-up this time.

That is of course unless these unconfirmed Xenomania songs from Amelia Lily are fantastic.

Drop everything: Little Mix Jesy will wear a RED SHOE on the album cover

Journalism is all about these moments of edge-of-year-seat breaking news, ladies and gents.

The word from the Little Mix camp is that Jesy Nelson will wear a red shoe on the front cover of the girlband’s debut album. By the looks of things her other shoe will be similarly red.

WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME TO BE ALIVE.

Little Mix to première new single on Britain’s Got Talent?

In a change from the norm, Little Mix will be the first X Factor winners since Shayne Ward to put out their first proper single just a few months after their victory, and it is speculated that they will perform it on a Britain’s Got Talent live show.

What’s more, Simon Cowell seems to be putting pressure on the quartet – Perrie, Leigh-Anne, Jesy and Jade – to match the ridonkulous success of One Direction.

Jesy told the Daily Star: ”We had a meeting with Simon three weeks ago so he could listen to the track, and it was like sitting in the headmaster’s office. We were so nervous before going in, it was surreal.”

Jade added: ”He really liked it. He’s happy with the progress we’ve made in such a short time and just wants us to be as successful as One Direction.

“The album’s going to be so different. No-one’s expecting what it sounds like.”

The BGT live shows will roll around in May and are thought to be considered a giant platform on which to launch the tune. It’s alleged by various outlets that contributors to the album include Gary Barlow (OH NO), One Direction writer Biff Stannard and production team TMS, who created Dappy’s ‘No Regrets’.

Watch: Little Mix reprise Don’t Let Go at NTAs

X Factor champions Little Mix gave their first TV performance of 2012 tonight, as they sang ‘Don’t Let Go (Love)’ at the National Television Awards.

The quartet all looked on tip top form (especially Perrie) and sang their adorable hearts out, as per usual.

PLEASE CAN WE HAVE A ‘DON’T LET GO’ STUDIO VERSION ON THE ALBUM THAAAAANKS.

Vote of confidence for Little Mix: Simon Cowell brands X Factor 2011 finalists ‘sub-standard’

Simon Cowell as confessed that this year’s X Factor was “sub-standard”. OUCH FOR LITTLE MIX.

In an interview for the Daily Mail he admitted that there “wasn’t enough raw talent” on the eighth season of the show, and said of the final 16: “We have good years and crappy years and there just wasn’t enough raw talent and personality in this year’s finals.”

He added: “Certainly The X Factor here felt sub-standard. It won’t happen again. The selection process has to be better.”

Does this mean the judging panel has to be better? He’s also gone on record saying he can’t see himself getting rid of Louis Walsh, but he did cryptically say of Gary Barlow: “Some people loved him, some people didn’t.”

We know from his complementary tweets that he was a fan of Tulisa’s work with Little Mix, leaving Kelly Rowland’s job up in the air.

Marcus Collins is releasing his debut album in March, with Little Mix expected to follow suit later in the Spring. Amelia Lily has recorded a duet with Kelly Rowland.

Forget the one-year wait! Little Mix aiming for Spring album release

The one-year wait for the X Factor winners’ debut album worked well for Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke, but it certainly didn’t prove particularly successful for Leon Jackson, Joe McElderry or, to a certain extent, Matt Cardle.

So the good news is that the standard “THE WAIT IS OVER!” crap might not be used with Little Mix, who have been tweeting about being in the studio and may release their debut LP as early as this Spring.

When I say “might”, I mean the Daily Star version of “might”, so let’s not jump to conclusions just yet.

“Little Mix are in talks with both Jessie and Tulisa about the album,” an insider told the paper. “It is not yet known how they will feature but it’s likely they will appear on separate tracks.

“The plan is to release their album as early as spring if they can get enough good songs together. They want to capitalise on their momentum ASAP and release an early summer album before giving it another big push on the X Factor live shows in October.”

The album is still pencilled in on Amazon for release on September 3. Tulisa, coincidentally, is scheduled on the same site to release an album on May 7.

Oh, and in other X Factor-related news, appaz Kelly Rowland’s been working with Calvin Harris. GOOD NEWS.

Midweek Chart Update: Who’ll be Number 1 on New Year’s Day?

It’s the week in which gift vouchers get spent and Christmas songs fade into oblivion, as the last chart of 2011 prepares for its unveiling on New Year’s Day, 2012.

Coldplay are leading the way at the moment with the two-month-old ‘Paradise’, pushing Military Wives down to No. 3 with ‘Wherever You Are’. Olly Murs’ ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ is sandwiched between the two, while Flo Rida is set to rebound to No. 4 with ‘Good Feeling’ and Little Mix dip to No. 5 with ‘Cannonball’.

Ed Sheeran, Rihanna, Labrinth, LMFAO and Rizzle Kicks complete the Top 10, with The Wanted’s ‘Warzone’ up to No. 18 as it gets its full release on iTunes.

On the albums chart, Michael Buble’s Christmas is unsurprisingly set to lose No. 1, and in fact it’ll be surprising if it stays in the Top 10. Today it’s clinging on at No. 10, but may fall further by 23:59 on Saturday night.

Ed Sheeran’s looking good for a return to the top in that chart, with Coldplay, Olly Murs, Bruno Mars and Amy Winehouse completing the Top 5.
