Ratings: BGT Final is most-watched show of 2012; The Voice hits new low

The Britain’s Got Talent final became the most-watched show of 2012 last night, as viewers flocked to see Ashleigh and Pudsey pip Jonathan and Charlotte to the title.

The Simon Cowell talent series, which in fairness really has upped its game talent-wise over the course of the semi-finals, had an average of 11.38 million viewers, peaking with 13.8 million in the last five minutes. Although the show has generally wavered compared with the 2011 figures, this year’s finale was a very marginal increase on the 11.35 million who watched last year’s climax with Jai McDowall and Ronan Parke.

And what of The Voice?

OH and what of The Voice

Moved to an earlier time of 6:10 to avoid a clash with Britain’s Got Talent, the show shed ANOTHER 2.5 million viewers week-on-week (1 million compared to last Sunday’s results show) and had a poor 5.6 million average.

The low figure is easily explained by the earlier start time (a lot of people on Twitter seemed to complain that they missed the memo altogether), but whether or not anyone who missed it will be bothered about tuning in tonight or next week remains to be seen.  What a shame.

Will Simon Cowell drop David Walliams or Alesha Dixon from Britain’s Got Talent?

As with any Simon Cowell-helmed talent show, the end of a series means the beginning of speculation surrounding the future of the judging panel.

This year’s Britain’s Got Talent ratings have been a little underwhelming – it may have been trumping The Voice over the past few weeks, but compared to last year’s figures (which themselves were a downturn on 2010), the show has actually declined in popularity once again.

But will Cowell attempt to revive the figures by changing the panel again? Will newbies David Walliams or Alesha Dixon be cut?

It’s good news! Simon told The Sun that their jobs are safe, adding:

“The chemistry has worked really well — it’s been one of the most fun panels I’ve ever worked with.”

He added that Alesha has been “a breath of fresh air”, whilst David is “the weirdest person I’ve ever worked with but we’ve become great friends. He’s a brilliant judge”.

Alesha herself has said she’d “jump at the chance” to come back for a second year.

Who’ll be the Britain’s Got Talent wildcard?

The Mend are the overwhelming favourites to be named the Britain’s Got Talent wildcards tomorrow night.

Ten acts from this week’s five semi-finals have progressed through to tomorrow’s climax, but judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams decided last night which additional act they will be putting through.

The frontrunners with bookies are:

  1. The Mend – 1/2 favourites
  2. Four Corners – 3/1
  3. Twist and Pulse Dance Company – 9/2
  4. Billy George – 5/1
  5. Zipperah Tafari – 6/1
  6. Paige Turley – 40/1
  7. Lauren Thalia – 40/1
  8. The Show Bears – 40/1
  9. Analiza Ching – 50/1
  10. Denis Egel – 50/1
  11. Malakai Paul – 50/1
  12. Hope Murphy – 66/1

Fish on Percussion, Lazor Harp and The Jive Aces are 500/1 outsiders.

Rebecca Ferguson performs incrediballad on Britain’s Got Talent

Rebecca Ferguson made an interesting move on Britain’s Got Talent last night – instead of performing her new single ‘Glitter and Gold’, she played fan favourite ‘Teach Me How To Be Loved’.

The track is not a single but is a standout of her debut album Heaven.

The choice seemed a bit puzzling but, thinking about it, R-Fergz isn’t a ‘singles’ artist – she could have performed ‘Glitter & Gold’ but it probably wouldn’t have sent it propelling up the iTunes singles chart. It probably wouldn’t have had that big an effect on the album sales either seeing as it has already benefited from that song by leaping 30-13 in last week’s album chart.

As it is, ‘Teach Me How To Be Loved’ has fired up to No. 51 on iTunes and, most impressively, the album has soared back to No. 3.

Watch the gorgeous, broken-legged performance below.

Britain’s Got Talent drops to record ratings low

It’s not just The Voice that’s losing momentum with viewers – last night’s Britain’s Got Talent fell to a record low for a live episode.

The results broadcast, which saw the Loveable Rogues and Molly Rainford progress to Saturday’s finale, attracted a modest 6.8 million viewers, more than 20% down on the equivalent episode from last year.

The main show, which aired from 7:30-9:00pm, averaged 7.8 million viewers, significantly down on the 9.4 million who watched the previous round on Monday night.

According to Telly Mix, ‘some’ have blamed the dip on the fact that this year’s live shows are not broadcasting during Half Term week, as they usually do. Interestingly though, barely any showbiz news outlets have picked up on the fact that the series has hit an all-time-low… most are still concerned with trying to bring down The Voice.

Meanwhile, re The Voice, BBC controller Danny Cohen has insisted that he is unfazed by the show’s recent reversal of fortunes, pointing out that the X Factor only had 5 million viewers in its early days.

Let’s compare the guest performers on The Voice and Britain’s Got Talent this evening

Simon Cowell made a nice playful dig at The Voice on tonight’s Britain’s Got Talent. Amanda Holden also had a go but it wasn’t as funny.

“Being a star is more about a voice,” he said, leaving a long, pointed silence afterwards. He’s got a point – nobody’s going to vote for Boringy McBoring on a talent show, are they?

But then, let’s compare the live special guests on tonight’s episodes of both shows.

For The Voice, Emelie Sande. Not what you’d call a charismatic ‘star’, but she’s got a pretty enviable set of pipes on her.

For Britain’s Got Talent, Tulisa. Not what you’d call an enviable set of pipes, but a charismatic star.

Hmmm… no disrespect to Tulisa, but think the ‘winner’ is fairly obvious there.

Ryan O’Shaughnessy makes world’s fastest comeback, WILL compete on Britain’s Got Talent semis

In entirely predictable ‘breaking news’, Ryan O’Shaughnessy WILL compete in the Brtiain’s Got Talent semi-finals.

When the story of his departure was put out earlier today, it wasn’t hard to envisage the “unless he gets out of his contract…” bit becoming a reality.

And LO, he has been released from his Universal contract following a brief stint on The Voice of Ireland, and tells the show’s official website:

“I’m over the moon to be through to the Semi-Finals. I was contracted to do another show, but I’ve since been released from my contract. I want to thank the Judges for giving me a second chance. The reveal was such an emotional ordeal for me. I was fraught with nerves. I felt as though I’d let Simon down. Simon’s somebody you want to please, so it felt awful to disappoint him. I’m looking forward to the Live Shows. I’ve been working on new material and focusing on the music. My mystery girl and I have decided to just stay friends, but it’d be nice to meet someone after BGT. Being selected for the Semi-Finals is like a dream come true!’

Simon Cowell dumps ‘No Name’ singer Ryan O’Shaughnessy from Britain’s Got Talent

UPDATE: Forget all the below, Ryan is back – click here

Simon Cowell will be seen axing Ryan O’Shaughnessy from Britain’s Got Talent this evening.

The singer has been subject to speculation over his future on the show following reports he already is already under contract with Universal. The pre-existing arrangement comes as a result of his participation in The Voice of Ireland, where he was eliminated after one week.

Simon tells the 19-year-old in this evening’s instalment:

“We have a bit of a problem, and I think you know what that problem is, don’t you? You’re on another show which you’re signed up to. You signed a contract with another company so why did you come and audition for this show? All you’re doing is taking the place of somebody else, who isn’t in your position on two shows. I’ll be absolutely blunt with you, we were going to give you a yes, but I can’t… you understand that.”

Making a swipe at The Voice Of Ireland, Ryan said:

“Song writing is my thing and I wasn’t allowed to express my own music on the other show, but I was on this show, it was a better opportunity for me… Right now I know exactly what I want to do, I need to get home, get that organised so I can get out of that show and come back over here and do BGT because that’s what I want to do.”

It is thought that Ryan may still be able to compete in the live shows if he manages to get out of his contact with Universal.
