Is Brothers & Sisters axed or not?

Poor ‘Brothers & Sisters’ is still waiting for the final word from ABC as to whether it’ll be back for a sixth season, but Rachel Griffiths (Sarah) seems to have implied it’s all over at the Logie Awards in Australia. Making comments suggesting she’ll be out of work next year, she has also revealed plans to direct a feature-length film in her native Australia.

In the US, the show’s ratings have been on the slide during the current fifth season, plummeting to an all-time low of 6.3 million viewers on April 17th. The first four seasons all averaged over 10 million.

Axe reports date right back to this time last year, when the show was picked up for a reduced season of 18 episodes this year. That was later extended to 22, and comments made about the departure of Emily Vancamp as Rebecca implied there were still long-term plans for the show.

The show was not one of ABC’s early renewals earlier this year, with experts saying it had a “50%” chance.

Despite loving the show to pieces, we thoroughly expect official confirmation of the show’s end in the next few weeks.

What’s going on with One Tree Hill?

The future of American teen drama One Tree Hill has been up in the air for weeks, and mixed signals released yesterday have failed to clear much up.

The good news is that several of the show’s lead stars have signed contracts for a ninth season, should there be one. Series originals Bethany Joy Galeotti (Hayley) and Sophia Bush (Brooke) have both vowed to return, as have Robert Buckley (Clay), Austin Nichols (Julian), Lisa Goldstein (Millicent) and Jana Kramer (Alex). As for James Lafferty (Nathan), he has yet to sign any contracts but is expected to return on a part-time basis. There’s also speculation that Chad Michael Murray may reprise the role of Lucas at some point, after teasing his Twitter followers on Monday with: “Return to OTH? I don’t know. Maybe next season for u guys. I Love that Lucas is missed. Give Mark Schwann the credit. He built him. [sic]“

The bad news, as already alluded to, is that the show has not yet been renewed by The CW. The network yesterday granted early pick-ups for its flagship shows ‘Gossip Girl’ (no confirmation yet on whether Taylor Momsen has quit), ’90210′, ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Vampire Diaries’, with ‘America’s Next Top Model’ planning its first ever all-star cycle with memorable contestants from years gone by.

Some insiders report that the reason for ‘OTH’s absence from yesterday’s announcement is Lafferty’s indecisiveness; believing that the network will only green-light season nine if he is on board in some capacity. You can’t really blame them – season eight has been the first ever season to average less than 2 million viewers.

We’ll keep you posted with updates.

Demi Lovato explains rehab visit and personal struggles in TV interview

Disney starlet Demi Lovato has shown Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears how it’s done, coming clean to her fanbase about the personal struggles surrounding her rehab visit last year.

The star of ‘Camp Rock’ and ‘Sonny With A Chance’ checked in to a treatment facility in 2010 following reports that she punched one of her backing dancers in the face.

In this brief but honest interview to US show 20/20, she reveals how she had been self-harming since the age of 11, even after a red-carpet photo revealed scars. She also discusses how she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder whilst in rehab.

When she first checked-in, the official reason was “personal struggles”. Predictable tabloid rumours suggesting drug addictions were blasted by her reps.

Demi, whose sister plays the eldest Solis daughter on ‘Desperate Housewives’, has now quit ‘Sonny With A Chance’ to focus on her music, and the follow-up to her US No1 album ‘Here We Go Again’ (review) is in production.

How terrible does Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure look?

The trailer actually uses “FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE SANTA CLAUSE 2″ as a major selling point, so our breath is hardly baited for ‘High School Musical’ spin-off Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, but putting our most-likely-accurate assumptions to one side, here are the vitals:

  • The film features just four original songs, so it’s not a “musical” as such.
  • Ashley Tisdale is the only major original ‘High School Musical’ cast member to appear, aside from Robert Curtis Brown and Jessica Tuck as her parents. Vanessa Hudgens was rumoured to be making a cameo, but this never materialised.
  • The premise: Sharpay is seen performing at the Lava Springs Country Club and a famous producer offers her dog a Broadway role, leading to a New York move for both Sharpay and the aforementioned dog.
  • Original ‘HSM’ director/choreographer Kenny Ortega is not involved.
  • The film is getting a direct-to-DVD release and is out in the USA on Monday. Crushingly, us Brits have a little longer to wait.

We won’t lie – we were keen ‘High School Musical’ fans during the show’s glory years, as were many a secretive young adult and, indeed, older adult. But now those days are gone and Zac’n'Vanessa are off starring in “proper films”, it looks like producers have taken the wise decision to target strictly the youngest super-fans with this spin-off. We’ll see how it fares.

Here’s the official trailer:

Good things to come on Desperate Housewives

So tonight’s Desperate Housewives comeback after an insufferably unnecessary mid-season break may have been a bit of a dud episode, but FEAR NOT – we’ve sifted through some spoilers and, without giving too much away, here are some teasers on what’s to come over the next few weeks…

  • Good news! Lynette’s mother will be making a return for a juicy new storyline.
  • Bob and Lee will be looking into adoption – does this mean they might get an actual weighty storyline?!
  • Susan hunts for a kidney transplant and finds an unlikely potential donor.
  • Predictably, Paul’s not going to let on immediately that he knows who Beth’s mother is. He plots a bloody revenge, but an unexpected development will rock the boat in a few weeks’ time…
  • Carlos will eventually learn about Andrew running over his mother back in Season 1.
  • Looks like Keith will be around a little longer – there’s an interesting new storyline coming up for him in a couple of weeks’ time.

The Americans are substantially ahead of us, so if you want more detailed spoilers then head over to the Desperate Housewives Season 7 Wikipedia page.

Spoiler Alert: Two 90210 regulars to leave this season

Stop reading now if you don’t want to know which two 90210 regulars will definitely be bowing out at the end of the current third season.

Show bosses are aiming to move the characters off to college in the fourth season, and as a result they have opted not to renew the contracts of the only two permanent “adult” characters left – Annie and Dixon’s mother Deb, played by Lori Loughlin, and teacher Ryan, played by Ryan Eggold.

Ironically Eggold, age 26, is six years YOUNGER than Trevor Donovan, who plays Teddy.

The third season of the show is currently four episodes in on E4.

Hostages, gay affairs and financial struggles: Here are some 90210 teasers

We won’t give anything specific away, but here are some hints and teasers about what lies ahead for those watching 90210 at UK pace…

- One of the main couples will go their separate ways, but before long the girl will hook up with a character we’ve known for a while (a move which could do a lot of damage to someone else), and the guy will question his sexuality thanks to a new character (pictured above).

- Adrianna will be made to suffer for stealing Javier’s songs when his uncle demands a role in her career.

- Silver will be eating her words over the Naomi/Mr Cannon situation sooner than you might expect; but that doesn’t mean he’ll be going away any time soon. In fact, did someone say “hostage situation”?

- Debbie Wilson will face financial difficulties that lead Annie to take drastic action, but in lighter news the divorcee will find an unexpected new love interest.

- And finally, an old face will return to Dixon’s surprise.

Good news for Grey’s, Modern Family; question marks for Housewives, Brothers & Sisters

It’s that time of year when the US networks reveal what shows are safe and which are on the way out. ABC has already revealed the fate of six favourites, but two remain uncertain.

Grey’s Anatomy and its spin-off Private Practise will return for seasons eight and five respectively, while comedies Modern Family, Cougar Town and The Middle will all return for a third run. There’ll also be a fourth season for Castle, a crime-drama that’s not so well known in the UK.

But – here’s the tense bit – the futures of our two favourites, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters, are still up in the air. The cast of ‘Housewives’ were only ever signed on to do seven seasons, and although it’s thought that creator Marc Cherry has been granted another two years, negotiations with Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, Teri Hatcher and Marcia Cross are still ongoing.

Meanwhile, ‘Brothers and Sisters’ has been surrounded by axe rumours ever since ABC only ordered 18 episodes for Season 5. Despite that number being raised to 22 in October, “sources” still believe there is a 50/50 chance the show will be cancelled at the end of the current season.

New 90210: The promising and the horrendous

The third season of 90210 had its much-publicised première on E4 tonight, showing that after a trashy-but-addictive first season and a just-trashy second season, this new one could go either way.

It all started a bit haphazardly: crammed into the first half of the episode alone were both an earthquake and a fatal car accident, both of which were rushed and both of which were a bit much on top of the already confusing three-month flashforward from the end of Season 2. We were begging throughout Season 2 for the Annie hit-and-run storyline to conclude but the sudden resolution at the top of Season 3 is a tad unsatisfying; as are the sudden disappearances of Harry and Jasper. Don’t even get us started on the abundance of extra hair on Dixon’s head.

The Naomi rape storyline is being handled well thus far by scriptwriters, but we’re not convinced yet that actress AnnaLynne McCord quite has the chops to pull it off. We could be wrong, we’ll see. As for the horrendous Oscar, we’ve had enough of him already, with or without the unforgivable use of the classic not-stealing-it’s-borrowing line.

On the plus side, it’s good to see Annie back to her usual chipper self after a dire second season, and her relationship with Liam could bring back some of the on-off rivalry with Naomi that we loved two years ago. We still can’t take Teddy seriously as an 18 year-old school kid (seriously… the actor is 32), but hopefully the third season of the show will bring it back to the good groundwork it laid in season 1. The deciding factor will be if we still care in four weeks’ time, as that’s about as long as it took us to fall out with season 2.
