Primetime Emmy nominations 2012: Modern Family, Mad Men, 30 Rock, Downton Abbey lead the pack

The nominations for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards – TV’s equivalent of the Oscars – have been revealed, with Mad Men and American Horror Story scooping 17 nominations each.

British phenomenon Downton Abbey has taken 16 nods, whilst BBC favourite Sherlock got 13 – equal to 30 Rock and Breaking Bad.

Modern Family also did exceptionally well, and the great news as well is that Kathryn Joosten – the Desperate Housewives star who died just weeks after the series finale was broadcast – has been posthumously nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy.

There’s a flaw in the Big Brother system if Luke A and Lauren are up for eviction

With the bookies at the moment, the Top 4 Big Brother contenders are Deana, Adam, Lauren and Luke A – the four members of the group known to each-other and to the viewers as The Outsiders.

This week, with face-to-face nominations, Lauren and Luke A are up for eviction, outnumbered by ringleaders Conor and Caroline and their sort-of-followers Scott, Becky, Sara, Ashleigh and Luke S.

When it comes to who’s going to win, it’s inevitable that the public will pick the underdogs over those who take up the classic high school-style Regina George role. But there’s a flaw in the system if we’re forced to choose between two of them for eviction. With the unfortunate and thoroughly disappointing transfer of Becky from bubbly and entertaining favourite to superior bitch, The Outsiders are now the only four will almost certainly beat whoever they are up against in a public vote – except, of course, if they’re put up against each-other.

Forced to pick, the show could probably cope better without the increasingly grumpy Luke A; but some kind of twist now needs to be introduced to ensure that some of the more loathsome ringleaders are shown the door before The Outsiders just get plucked off one by one over the next few weeks.

It’s all well and good wanting to keep the firey characters in for the drama, but we’re sure as hell not gonna be tuning in night after night if we don’t actually like anyone.

Amazing new X Factor USA trailer premieres

Another new promo for the X Factor USA has premiered, following the Britney-only clip that surfaced earlier this week.

The new one shows someone getting led away in handcuffs, someone getting taken away by paramedics, one dude breaking down completely, and Demi Lovato proving she has one of the best laughs in the world.

Check it out below.

Really CBA with the UK version this year…

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! Hollyoaks kills off major character in completely unpublicised twist

Hollyoaks producers have pulled a blinder and killed off one the show’s biggest characters in a totally unexpected twist tonight.

Viewers of E4′s First Look episode were stunned when Lynsey Nolan was found dead by Brendan.

Karen Hassan, the actress who played the character, shot the scenes a few weeks ago, but neither she nor producers had leaked any details for fear of spoiling it for fans.

Digital Spy reports that a major whodunit storyline will now kick off, involving a number of suspects with feasible motives. The biggest of which is surely Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle), expected to return to the show shortly.

Mercedes McQueen will also be in the frame after trying to keep Lynsey quiet about the whole Mitzeee Minniver stalking thing.

Who do you think did it?!

Hugo Taylor quits Made In Chelsea; Cheska Hull considers following

Made In Chelsea has been renewed for a fourth season, but up to four cast members will not be appearing.

The fact that it’s taken so long for E4 to make an announcement had got fans panicked, but the reason for the setback is the Olympics. With so many tourists in town, producers will not be allowed to film until September.

And definitely out of the picture is Hugo Taylor, a familiar face from the very first season.

He tells Now: “I’m quitting. It’s a big gamble but I think I might have outgrown the show. Originally the producers only wanted me as a peripheral character and that’s all I wanted to contribute. I could wind up having absolutely everything or I could end up with nothing. But I’ve become lazy and comfortable on the show.

“I often look at what I’ve done and think, ‘S**t, did I completely sell out?’ Staying on Made In Chelsea and bitching about the colour of someone’s dress has started to become unimportant to me. I’m 26 – the show works better with people under 24. It becomes harder to do these shows as you get older. I started thinking I need to do something credible that I’m proud of.”

Additionally out of the frame is Professor Green, who won’t be making any more cameos with girlfriend Millie Mackintosh, and – allegedly – Kimberley Garner, following a violent row with Harriet Loder.

Finally, it’s also been reported that Francesca Hull – ‘Cheska’ – is mulling over her future on the show.

She told Bang Showbiz: “I’m not sure if I’m going to be in the next series but we’ll see. I’m having a lot of meetings with people but we’ll see what happens. I’m relieved and happy to have wrapped on that series, it got a bit much and was quite dramatic. It was tough but it was good fun at the same time.”

Made In Chelsea will return in the autumn. Spencer Matthews’ departure has already been confirmed.

EastEnders’ Ian Beale returns as a tramp; looks absolutely hilarious

Ian Beale, the indestructible verruca on the foot of EastEnders, will be seen making a return to Albert Square as a bloody tramp in episodes to be screened very soon.

He has been absent from Walford since last month when he was jilted at the altar, and tabloid rumours speculating that he would return as a homeless man have been confirmed.

With long hair, a beard and… quite a nice polo shirt, actually; it is assumed that he has spent the last few weeks living on the street dealing with his mental breakdown.

Show bosses worked with various mental health experts and charities when working on the scenes that saw him begin to lose grip on reality whilst struggling to deal with the break-up of his finances and his family. He will be seen making his return in the next few weeks.

Big Brother nominations spoiler: Who’s up for eviction?

It’s been a few days since Big Brother bosses re-introduced the ban on all nomination discussion between housemates, and the results of the first truly private vote of the season have been unveiled.

It’ll be a tricky one this week, with news that Deana and Lydia are facing off.

Deana is certainly slightly less hated than Lydia, and were it a Vote To Evict she’d be laughing. But Lydia, much as she is a detestable character, has provided the show with most of its fireworks so far. Will that be enough to keep her in in a Vote To Save scenario?

The contestants’ reaction to the news will be shown on Big Brother’s Bit On The Side tonight (June 25), before the nominations are exposed in full tomorrow (June 26).

In other news, Lauren has had a surge in support since surviving the chop last Friday, and is now the third favourite to win. Luke A and Adam are the joint favourites, each of them on 6/1.

Video: Britney Spears talks X Factor, is looking for ‘spark and spunk’

So it’s a long-established fact now that The X Factor USA is more exciting than The X Factor UK this year, purely because the judging panel is hella better and it’s pretty clear from the weaknesses of season one that Simon Cowell will have gone to hell and back to make it better.

In a new video clip (“new” as in four days ago, oops), judges Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and LA Reid discuss the San Fransisco auditions, with Britney brushing off the suggestion that she is the “toughest judge” and saying she tries to be constructively critical.

What the judges actually say isn’t particularly interesting, but I just love how comfortable Britney is in this clip. That wouldn’t be a big deal for most other celebs, but since The Great Meltdown Of ’07 every interview with her has been so carefully regulated and sucked dry of personality, and it’s reassuring when looking forward to the show’s premiere in September that she could well completely hold her own as a panellist and prove a lot of her critics wrong.

Also Demi is a legend. But we already knew that.

Big Brother eviction beaten by former host Davina McCall in ratings clash

Big Brother went head-to-head with its former frontwoman Davina McCall last night in a scheduling clash with Million Pound Drop Live.

Only 50,000 viewers separated the two, but Channel 4′s quiz show emerged victorious with 1.36 million (a 5.9% share of audiences) to Channel 5′s 1.31 million (5.6%) for Benedict’s eviction.

1.31 million for a Friday episode is remarkably low, but now that it’s only really the hardcore fans who are still watching BB, the weekly live broadcasts tend to be fairly consistent ratings-wise with the other days of the week. In fact, only last week 1.32 million viewers chose it over ITV2′s The Only Way Is Marbs, which had just over 0.9m.

Elsewhere, 8 Out Of 10 Cats achieved its highest audience since 2010 thanks to the promise of Jimmy Carr’s tax shame being addressed. It had 2.5 million people watching.

The Graham Norton Show entertained 3.74 million from 10.35pm.

Video: Kris Jenner furious at being thrown in a pool on Keeping Up With The Kardashians

Everyone’s favourite momager Kris Jenner is used as a “tribal sacrifice” in this week’s Keeping Up The Kardashians, getting chucked into a pool.

Her youngest daughters don war paint, grab her from her own bed (already made-up and in her dressing gown – it’s all so realistic and spontaneous, really), drag her downstairs on a rug and then throw her in the pool.

She’s all game for a laugh to begin with but once water’s involved, she’s ready to “KICK YOUR ASSES”. She’s also got the hump because she reckons she’s broken her toe.
