One Direction win best US chart début for British act since 1998

Blimey – One Direction’s US invasion is certainly going to plan, as ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ has pulled off the best Billboard debut for a British act in nearly 14 years.

The song bows at No. 28 in this week’s Hot 100 – not bad considering it hasn’t even been sent to mainstream radio stations for vital airplay yet.

It’s the best entrance a UK artist has managed since 1998, when The Verve’s ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ became the first transatlantic hit, starting off at No. 13.

There’s also good news for The Wanted this week, as ‘Glad You Came’ rises 25-23. Expect it to rise further next week in the wake of the Glee casts’ rendition of it on the latest episode. It’s already No. 5 in the US iTunes store, and No. 1 on the Canadian equivalent.

So, will ‘WMYB’ leap-frog ‘GYC’…?

Listen to my mash-up of ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ with Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ below.

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
