The identity of the victim is being kept closely under wraps, but a major character will die in the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, in an episode that is being billed as the saddest in the show’s eight-year history.
Sarah Drew (Dr April Kepner) told E! Online of the May 17 finale:
“Everyone bawled their way through the table read for the finale. It’s huge, it’s big, it’s sad, and it’s intense. And it’s left really unsettled. We don’t know what’s going to happen to a lot of our characters.”
Executive producer and creator Shonda Rhimes also promised trauma, saying “There’s some really shocking, horrible moments”.
Adding that the writers have been in tears, she claims it ranks higher on the Tragedy Scale than the hospital shooting at the end of season 6. “People’s mettle is going to be tested,” she said.
“I’ve been sitting with my head in my hands for days. I understand the choice I made, but it scares me how fans are going to react.”
It’s made pretty clear that the episode will be a cliffhanger, with more than one life potentially hanging in the balance. She tells TV Guide:
“We sort of end with our breaths held. It’s a great moment. We were joking in the writers’ room that if this was the series finale we’d be good to go. But we’ve been told very clearly it’s not.”
OOOOOOOOH.
